  2.  @doyouevendab77  I grew up in the NW, not Hawaii. But that would suck to live in a small state and have to rent a car, to go to different counties. Alaska has ferries and it's a large state. But with similar issues. Some towns are on islands with no road access. The difference is that Hawaii is a Democrat state. And they're obsessed with counterproductive rules. All cargo has to go to the islands and between islands by ship, so they already have an issue with invasive species, and whales.

  3.  @jakemafnas9864  Hawaii has the highest cost of living. I'm not sure is that means "poor". Not by how that is usually measured. I think it's mostly the tourism industry.

  4. The tldr: Hawaii is a Democrat state, which ties everything up in massive amounts of regulations, explaining why there is ferry service all over the Alaskan Islands but not Hawaii. For example, why is invasive species and whale habitat an issue for ferries when cargo has to go by ship between islands and internationally?
