A third party candidate can spoilt it for a major party candidate. Ross Perot got 19% of the vote, causing the 92' Bush loss.

Complicated is not Cornell West's style. It's obsurantism--making only vague and meaningless statements. It's typical of leftwing academia.

@RobDeSaster Ross Perot was a different person. He was similar in certain respects, being a populist conservative, perhaps similar to Ron Paul. But he was obviously taking votes from Bush. Today it would be hard for a Bush to take votes from a populist, eg Trump.
