@BwossManAF Your math is off a bit. The murder rate in the US is about 2.5x that of Canada. But this is just "feel good" legislation, ie it's done for purely political propaganda purposes. The 1994 assault weapons ban only banned guns with "military" looking features. They have such laws in NY, and it didn't prevent the Buffalo shooting. A gun's effectiveness is its ammunition not what it looks like.

They always make exceptions for police. It's always so silly when politicians look for ways to be useful. "Closes the boyfriend loophole." Who even heard of that?

@BwossManAF If we brought both countries to "common denominator" they wouldn't be the same countries. For example, look up crime by ethnic group. Then compare those groups in Canada and USA.

@meghan42 "And yet an assault weapon is capable of gunning down a number of people in short order" You're talking about semi-auto, or even just repeating rifles and pistols, not a made up category of "assault weapon". An ordinary pistol, eg Glock, will do that. It holds 10-17 bullets, and you can change the magazine in 1 second. Even modern revolves will fire one bullet with each trigger pull. And there are speed loaders. Just about every gun is "capable of gunning down a number of people in short order". Mexico has over 3x the murder rate of the US, so that lawsuit is a joke.

There was no mention of such a thing, until Biden desperately needed something to call an "accomplishment". You couldn't list which crimes or mental illnesses bar one from buying a gun. Everyone just knows a felony bars one. Biden could just as well talk of the "DUI loophole" and pass a law barring anyone with a DUI from buying a gun. It's not a loophole. It's just not in the law. He did the same thing with "ghost guns". I'm sure you don't even know what that is. And they're not used in crimes. They're parts people buy who build their own firearms.

This is all just silliness of the most useless president in over a century trying to show that he's useful. Why don't these fools figure out how to stop tanking the economy. It's boneheaded stupid things this guy keeps doing. You don't spend hundreds of billions to fix inflation. And you don't raise taxes in a recession. The guy's a total dunce.

@BwossManAF Another slight of hand anti-gun activists make is that they include suicides in their gun stats. Half of gun deaths in the US are suicides, which isn't even a criminal justice issue.

@meghan42 That's just a political stunt. An attempt to counter the embarrassment of a tonne of smuggling going from Mexico to the US, fantanyl and human smuggling taking lives. You have to show liability to sue, which they don't. Half of guns are made in Europe, Glock, Berretta, Mauser, Walthier. Where a gun is made means nothing.
