This is failing in the Senate anyways. But they could never ban all semi-auto rifles in the US. They did so in Australia but they don't have the same constitutional protections, have an authoritarian streak and don't have a firearm tradition.

Many companies make the AR type guns. You can buy them other places. It depends on the country's laws. They use circular reasoning. Ban "assault weapons", but there's not definition of an assault weapon.

You really think that how it works? That if you ban the AR, a potential shooter will not just buy the SKS, Ruger, or Springfield.

I think you can buy them through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. They had millions of them after WW2 and Korea. But you can also buy news guns with the same action, M1 Springfield.

Just like the 1994-2004 ban, this just feel good legislation. It bans guns based on cosmetic features. You could take a banned guy, changed the stock, and it becomes legal.

Militaries use the same cartridges as civilians. The Garand fired a 30.06, same as a big game rifle. Now they use 6.32 x 51 Nato which is slightly shorter, basically the same as the .303 deer cartridge, and Nato 5.56 in small guns. The only distinction of "weapon of war" is that military rifles tend to have full auto ability.

The military versions fire on full auto.
