@garrywynne1218 British democratic ideals go back to the Magna Carta. Every other country had dictatorships in the last couple centuries. Some didn't adopt that system until after WW2.

@garrywynne1218 In particular French people say things that don't conform to reality. Such as "You have to understand, Europe is more permissive than America." Is that why Charlie Hebdo has a long string of convictions for what would be protected speech in the US? Or, no right to a jury trial. Or, mandatory military service, instead of an all volunteer military. There's an acceptance of a larger role of the state.
