There was no income tax before the 20th century. And the country was largely financing itself on tariffs imposed on southern exports. That's a very rational reason to secede--paying for a government that doesn't represent you.

@MrMah-zf6jk There were threats of secession as early as 1836 from tensions over tariffs, which helped northern industry by raising prices but hurt southern exports. The South paid about 2/3 of revenue to the feds before the Civil War. The secession letters didn't mention tariffs because they needed tariffs to fund the war.
