  1. One certainly doesn't have to be black to be an African studies professor. But lying about yourself will come back to haunt you.  I think Indian tribes were pissed at Ward Churchill for claiming heritage.  Some of those "ethnic studies" departments are so lame that you can get a position with a masters degree and some phony heritage.

  2. Today, no one is going to get in trouble "passing as white". If you can, then it means you are mostly white anyways, so it doesn't amount to anything.  But it will mean that it is harder to get into the University of Michigan.
