It sounds like something you'd do to prevent an automatic police questioning. They likely have a policy that when someone comes into the ER who has been in a shooting to collect evidence and notify the police. Certainly the fact that he had a gunshot wound and was carrying a pistol should lead to police questioning. One of the train wreck aspects of this case is that the DA wanted to use Grosskreutz as their star witness, but he's more guilty than the guy they were using him to prosecute--illegal conceal carry, and pulling his gun on the defendant.

He most likely lied. Someone who's being defensive of his friend would have said "F.U. Gaige was just defending himself from the kid, bla bla bla CNN talking point bla bla bla CNN talking point" They wouldn't have posted that Gaige wanted to commit murder.
