  1. I would like to have seen the guy ask for the key. Usually people will accommodate you, if you're polite. He could have been an arrogant jerk and demanded the key.

  2. The difference is as much your tone than anything else. These guys probably asked for the key like they were entitled to it. It's only in urban areas that they even have a key. They have problems such as people shooting dope in the bathroom.
