In Perry Mason episodes the real guilty person would always confess on the stand. I think everyone knows that's totally unrealistic. But you have to tell a story in 1 hour, minus commercial breaks.

The federal sentences usually only apply to dealers. Federal agents will normally hand the suspect over to the state jurisdiction if it's not large quantity. If you're caught with > 5g of crack or >500 g of powder then you are almost certainly a dealer.

Joe Biden was actually a prominent drug warrior in the 80s and 90s. He was among the people pushing for the harsh mandatory minimum sentences. And he ran as a candidate on that. People like him are the reason why if you got caught with pot in Delaware you'd get taken to jail, while in California you'd get a ticket.

Rifles are much more deadly than pistols. A powerful riffle can kill a moose at 1000 yards. A pistol can kill a person in less that 30 yards.
