Russia wants to control the donbas and Crimea which is Ukrainian territory, Russia also wants Ukraine to have no army and be neutral. This is unworkable and unacceptable. Russia can make these demands because they are in a strong position at the moment but are getting weaker by the day. Ukraine is holting many advances by Russia, slowing others and taking back other areas. This war is becoming more and more costly to Russia, there will be a point where Russia will make a calculation, do they continue the costly war or do they give concessions to Ukraine and negotiate peace. Also, why should zelensky give up his territory when now its looking like Ukraine can take some territory back?
