  1. Obviously Russia would have conducted a cost-benefit analysis and taken most things into account, perhaps they underestimated the global response. But, its clear that Russia sees Ukraine joining NATO as more costly to Russia in the short, medium and most importantly, long term. Economic sanctions were an obvious response that Russia would be aware of, so they may have calculated that the long term gain in security would outweigh the short/medium term economic losses.
