@topologyrob If you are from Sydney or Melbourne I have great sympathy for you and totally agree the protestors might keep you in lockdown and or harder restrictions for longer. I am in Brisbane so our protestors making up things to protest about like vaccine mandates because they weren't restricted from doing so. The funny thing is vaccine mandates have existed for decades in certain settings and for certain international travel.

@oslo162 You're all over the place in your comment and clearly are unaware of Australia being a federation of states. That's great your country whichever country that happens to be is open, good for you. Melbourne is not Australia and it is a part of a state called Victoria that's where the 200 days number comes from , nowhere else in the country. If your country had 1.1% economic growth and a government deficit of around 7% last year or better that's great and clearly you are not from US or UK or Canada or anywhere in Europe pretty much so I am curious where you come from because not many countries doing better even if they are opening up a little earlier that debt from last year needs to be paid. South Korea and Japan are struggling too at the moment and Japan has a higher vaccination rate than Australia and South Korea similar. Look at the situation in Alabama and Mississippi which have higher vaccination rates than Australia plus significant natural infections on top of that, New South Wales and Victoria would be far worse than those 2 US states if they were to just let it rip, it's not an option, having people refused hospital care is a bad place to be along with all the people who get killed from catching the virus in hospital.

True but it's only a minority still.

Here's an interesting statistic for you, if the police had just killed every single protestor we would still have less covid 19 deaths per million than the US or UK if they were just chalked up as covid 19 deaths. Imagine if a government just took minimal actions to protect it's citizens and caved in to the demands of a small group, thousands dead and not too good for mental health either.

I didn't see the AR-15 s or city blocks on fire. Of course things problematic but even in those Mexican states things not that bad (Mexicans is a nickname for people south of the Queensland border so Victorian's and New South Welshmen because they keep migrating to Queensland)

It is essential actually for people's mental health, things need to be kept as normal as possible. Watch some clips of the North Korean News reader, that might give you a sense of how it might feel if we emptied out the television studios.

@jamiec4478 So Queensland Australia a hardline state from the beginning with a population of 5 million and 7 covid 19 deaths and you say restrictions don't work. Oh well there's no convincing you. Queensland isn't the only jurisdiction in the world to have a similar outcome.
1
@jamiec4478 Suicides were not up in Australia last year so to your point that more people have died from suicide in the same time frame so what the number didn't increase. In the US with no proper lockdowns people literally killing each other homicides in 2020 were up 50% yoy in a sample of 34 cities. An increasing homicide rate that is already 5 times that of Australia isn't a good indication of better mental health outcomes.
1
@jamiec4478 Why would you expect larger countries to have higher suicide rates? The rate is in deaths per 100,000 per year. Homicide rates are calculated in the same way.

@jamiec4478 What on earth are you talking about Queensland internally is fully open with minor capacity restrictions and masks in some settings for another week or 2. How is fully open a failure?
1
@jamiec4478 I don't have to watch tv to know the lack of restrictions in my state other than interstate/international travel. Certainly 2 states and one territory in Australia are struggling, that doesn't mean the other states and territory have failed does it? You might say eventually your state will fail and you might well be right however a significant number of people are already vaccinated although not enough for full opening so worst case scenario it's impossible from the available information that things could be as bad as in many jurisdictions around the world, even NSW , VIC and NZ this is the case the previous restrictions have already saved many lives because vaccines do work in reducing mortality and hospitalizations which is important to the general healthcare system. Success doesn't mean perfect you know, no place on the planet has had a perfect outcome because it's impossible. The caveat to what I say which you can't predict is a variant that renders the vaccines near useless and the mortality rate of the virus jumps up and we are all stuffed.
