Hang in there the best you can , unfortunately I tend to agree with your assessment because an open border policy let's in all strains and the risk is that only 1 evades one of the vaccines distributed on a large scale. Unless hotel quarantine for all becomes a reality this risk will always be there, most likely only half the risky strains have been identified and more are being created. Good news is cases going down which will be followed by less deaths due to a lag , but no guarantee that this situation doesn't reverse because of my above reasoning.

With most European countries plus US having open border , voluntary quarantine policies it's looking more and more likely because every strain circulates around these countries and only one strain needs to evade vaccines and no apparent plan to be rid of the virus just vaccinate a lot of people and cross fingers.

I am wondering if you are being funny. Anyway I just read that people from the UK have 8 days to make it back without any hotel quarantine , starting 15 February apparently. Even when that's instituted will only apply to 33 countries. It's up to an individual country to protect itself which most notably the UK, most European countries and US have chosen not to do. South Africa has the same voluntary quarantine schemes going like UK it would seem so in answer to your question yes South Africa isn't locking down properly because of leaks in the system, almost certainly the UK strain either is or soon will be in South Africa, so think of it as a virus exchange program.

That's not fear mongering, it could almost be forgiven for being the government propaganda mouthpiece it's so calm. Border still wide open for another 8 days , very reminiscent of the New York rush in about March last year I am guessing. All the Covid 19 strains from around the world can enter the UK over the next week unhindered. Why this doesn't seem to cause alarm I am uncertain. In Australia even one case of the UK strain escaping hotel quarantine will lockdown a city depending on that particular states approach, happened twice already, Brisbane and Perth. Geographically we are a long way away but on this particular issue you look like aliens to us and probably visa versa.
