That sort of baffles me how someone can believe that putting taxes on imported goods will cause the US to produce those goods at a lower cost than the imported goods were previously being sold at. One has to jump through quite a few logical hoops to arrive at Trump's conclusion as he stated previously.

Not necessarily, the reason for increased food prices will be taxing imports. As goods like food are supply and demand producers can't necessarily raise prices even if wages are higher. What can occur is the value of the farms go down as they are less profitable.
