  1. It's actually a good policy to stop farm subsidies, they are a drain on the US government finances and basically achieve nothing. Australia and New Zealand for example have extremely low subsidies mostly through government funded research, no cash handouts other than possibly disaster relief which would go to everyone. The US is currently Australia's largest market for beef by weight. How is it that it's come to this , the subsidised market isn't very competitive against a free market. Well part of it is likely that as all socialism does control or influence the means of production , US farmers are growing low value broad acre crops displacing other agricultural activities so they can get a guaranteed small return with the subsidies. I might be incorrect about the exact reason but it is a likely reason. Having said that ending subsidies should be done over time in a carefully considered manner, not just dropped basically making the government out to be untrustworthy and yes possibly causing a lot more pain than gradual consolidation of the industry where as most people know it's often a matter of get big or get out.
