  1. I actually agree with the Economist with caveats. As with everything in the US regarding government departments fraud is rampant. It's actually now a part of US culture where you can get elected even after committing fraud against a government using corporate protections of course. So fraud in disability benefits for veterans should be rooted out. It's a bit misleading to go back to 2000 and compare because there was no major conflicts involving US troops since the Vietnam War a long gap where people less likely to become disabled whereas Iraq and Afghanistan caused many disabilities recently. The waste in Veterans Affairs is likely extremely high when paying non market inflated rates for medicines definitely and most likely other contracts involving that department. Find the waste and actually do something about it. However i don't believe there's any intention to pay market rates for goods and services especially regarding pharmaceuticals.
