The second amendment is for "a well regulated militia" automatic weapons were banned by Reagan and nobody has challenged that, a ban on ordinary people having semi automatic weapons which do the most damage seems legal and bans do exist in certain jurisdictions but it's like the covid 19 policies of the US, guns are so freely available in a lot of places they end up everywhere. So my take on it is it's nothing to do with the second amendment.

  5.  I'm a misanthropist  Ok you seem to be correct to a point, it stated "in common use" so you can't just have any arms, you can't go and buy an RPG I would expect. I suppose hand guns are the preferred weapon of gangsters and AR-15 are the preferred weapon for mass school shootings. So I suppose they are in common use. The US has 5 times the homicide rate of any other wealthy country, gun culture is a contributor , give an inherently violent people compared to other countries full access to guns and some will use them.
