It's tough but necessary. I do think WA is a bit over the top but in the end it's their choice.

Have you actually read the self isolation policy, even if you follow it you can spread the virus. You can go and stay with someone already in the UK and they don't need to isolate with you, you can also catch public transport. Every country Australia , New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea, China , Taiwan, Vietnam, it's 2 weeks compulsory hotel quarantine. Most of Europe and US all just a voluntary unsupervised scheme which is absolutely meaningless, the fine in the UK for breaking the rules is less than the cost of hotel quarantine when payment is required if they ever bothered to fine anyone which I don't think they have.

@M J the main reason for not letting people out of Australia is the capacity to quarantine isn't very high. We can leave for certain reasons , but extremely strict and in general only allowed if you are leaving for a long period, one way it states is having a lease at the destination.

@stevepirie8130 just remember deaths come 4 to 8 weeks normally after the cases and consider the age of those infected, Florida will be looking pretty bad in about a month.

@stevepirie8130 look at your ONS numbers that's the true numbers based on death certificate data but will be trailing because I think it takes a few weeks for the data to completely come in. That within 28 days of a positive test is silly because once hospitalized you will not be retested unless you get better so if your hospital stay is longer than 28 days it's true you won't be counted in that statistic. I would think that everyone would be tested upon admission to check it's covid 19 or the flu or both because a mistake might be critical.

Sweet Science! if they do the job properly and the border is shut to everything but essential services and hotel quarantine for those returning home you can be like NZ or most states in Australia and get rid of it. If you get numbers down but not to near 0 and they reopen you achieve nothing. So which one are they doing?

Well if your president can , then they can, Trump's policy is just ignore the virus. The thing is it's not a certainty he will lose the election so until and unless a highly effective vaccine comes not much will change if he remains in the top job.

@Peter We certainly are along with our New Zealand counterparts. Everything open outside of Victoria football games with 10 of thousands of spectators. Interstate and now technically international travel opening up with New Zealand. My hope is we open to countries like Thailand , Vietnam and Taiwan but I don't think it's going to happen.

I feel sorry for you people, was it not possible to close the border and put in hotel quarantine for those entering and if it was you could have 0 cases or close to it. Given your description you even have a highly compliant population.

What are you talking about, the world was informed on December 31 of the viruses existence and it was known on January 15 that it was outside China in at least one case in Thailand, on January 21 a few countries had detected cases so the WHO informed that it hadn't been contained, on February 21 the WHO informed the world that time to contain the virus was running out , meanwhile Europe and US doing nothing of substance and we see the results.

@iangoldsworthy2056 They didn't know early on about transmission etc. and the plans of UK were clearly deficient , same as the US. Australia had more detected cases along with all the countries like Thailand, South Korea and Japan as of 20 February, the approximate crossover date when the US started detecting more cases than Australia. It wasn't we had more cases it would seem but we were detecting cases which is significant and in hindsight did demonstrate readiness. The scientists etc. come from countries like mine and yours mostly, that is overweight with scientists from Western Democracies, so are we going to start locking up our scientists? Like really.
