@charliefoxtrot5001 You're nuts , Sydney isn't Australia. However yes it's going through the same thing as Melbourne before and no, unarmed public servants in camouflage uniforms isn't close to martial law, they have no powers, they just expand police numbers and they will be the boys who go get the coffees and doughnuts for the coppers and doing mundane tag along stuff, go and buy the old lady in lockdown her medication and food things like that. Not heavily armed military with combat equipment, not like a US riot with the national guard and riot police brought in with plenty of rubber bullets and tear gas and military vehicles. We are a peaceful country thanks.

@milenalm5288 7 deaths for a population of 5 million, the lowest deaths in the world on a per capita basis for any reasonable sized jurisdiction along with most Chinese provinces. What numbers would you need to see to be convinced lockdowns work. Another note the states run the responses in Australia, NSW was less cautious than QLD and now 200 cases a day and minimum 1 months lockdown for greater Sydney.

@charliefoxtrot5001 No the military enforces nothing, tagging along behind a policeman with a pen and notepad or whatever with no powers. Sydney is a city within Australia, it is not Australia. No different if I see something happen in a US state , it's not the country.

It's a degree of self censoring I believe , because it's inconvenient to compare the US with other rich countries on several metrics. Best of luck to you.

It's tough , you take care of yourself , family and friends the best you can. Best of luck.

But the Delta variant spreads no matter what, look at Indonesia which is all tropical so not much seasonality.
2
You predicted the Delta variant did you, not a single person predicted it but you did, well done.

@DropdudeJohn Without the Delta variant everything would be going ok now. As we have seen other countries like China , South Korea, Japan and Vietnam having the same problems since Delta. Without Delta a few countries in the region would most likely have quarantine free travel but that idea is on hold now as most countries lose control from Delta.

I hope you're wrong and it's just very difficult, China and Australia the last 2 countries with reasonable populations to possibly fall from Delta (Taiwan had Alpha only so far) and yes we both having problems with Delta. It's to nobodies advantage if every country in the world having major problems, means vaccines become even less available for poor countries.

You must be from Sydney or Melbourne, long lockdowns can have the effect of losing track of time. Anyway stay safe and our First Ministers and Prime Minister in the scheme of things have done a great job as you can see compared to all major countries in the world, China having problems with Delta variant too now.

@charliefoxtrot5001 I explained before doing mundane things that don't require a policeman. There's no point tying up police resources doing traffic control and buying medicine for people in quarantine etc. The number 1 civil right is life, it comes above all other rights , you can say full civil rights have to be abandoned under such circumstances and so what , is allowing a significant number of people to die protecting their civil rights? In times of crisis like a war civil rights will be reduced also it's actually no big deal, the government isn't God and can't stop the virus with some magic trick. Putting restrictions in place for disease control is actually listed in the Australian constitution and in the case of the US although not in the constitution a federal court found it to be legal in the 1920's and nobody has challenged that. It's absurd to think a government has no power to protect it's citizens by putting controls in place.

In most states in Australia at the moment if you were wanted for murder your case would be put on the back burner as the police are busy hunting down suspected covid 19 cases and close contacts. It doesn't bode well for criminals in the long term though because the police have been getting so much training tracking people down and getting dam good at it.
