I think because people in many countries don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. People also like to simplify things down to a single concept. Mask wearing is an example, from a public health perspective it is actually the last line of defence. So pro maskers and anti maskers want to argue about that single issue. All evidence points to masks slow spread but in no way will stop spread. People rationalize lockdown to mean one thing only that is direct measures against the individual in an area without considering travel restrictions, quarantine , contact tracing etc. From observation a draconian but partial lockdown does more harm than good. However a draconian full lockdown is highly effective and has overall support where it is done , for example in Victoria Australia or New Zealand. Most other Australian states did also until things under control, draconian travel restrictions still exist and sometimes go too far but better to overdo than underdo.

The very low urbanisation rate of 27% compared to rich Western countries around 90% and higher will make a really big difference to the overall rate of spread. The problem is of course if nothing is done to stop the spread although the spread might be slow there is nothing to stop it from continuing. I hope I am wrong and some county governments are doing a great job but from your comment plus from John this doesn't seem to be the case. I wish you and your country the best.

Chris Stevens Here is a list of lockdown countries Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Please specify which country you are talking of. No other countries have had a total lockdown only partial measures. I have left China off the list because you are unlikely to believe their data.

I think the definition of asymptomatic varies widely. Probably their definition requires severe illness, versus being a bit sick.

@anthonydeacon881 Have you ever heard someone describe asymptomatic cases of covid-19. I have and technically it's a contradiction. Covid 19 is a disease caused by covi sars2 infection, you can't be diseased if you have no symptoms. I agree the literal meaning of asymptomatic means no symptoms but I think almost everywhere an interpretation occurs, someone with a runny nose only is considered asymptomatic even though they aren't.

I have read through your governments rules and one made me laugh during self quarantine you can stay with your travel companion in a hotel room for 10 days , should try to stay 1.5 metres away from them and no hugging , kissing or sex. In a survey by pew research that includes 14 wealthy countries Netherlands had the highest support of the government response, you beat Australia by 1% I think it was. Another funny thing is countries like yours welcome Australians without any restrictions but our government won't let us out.

Chris Stevens Japan has a hard border lockdown and quarantine measures, they are spending 40% of GDP on economic stimulus measures. I acknowledge the personal lockdown was voluntary however people of Japan seem to comply better with a voluntary lockdown than many do with a hard lockdown. The economic performance of Japan is inline with the world. Every country has a Rat sh*t economy propped up by government stimulus regardless of health policy. So you seem to agree certain hard lockdown measures are ok because Japan's border is basically locked shut. I don't believe any other country can emulate Japan because culturally they are highly cooperative so should not be compared to Western countries that much. Japan's contact tracing seems really good. The UK has never locked down the border so not a hard lockdown and contact tracing etc. failed. Don't compare a half open failed lockdown to a proper lockdown. Of course Japans equally drastic lockdown to UK has produced different results and totally agree a border lockdown is required , because no country with an open border has contained the virus.
