Most Zoonotic viruses that cross to humans they do find the source but it can take from weeks or months to many years, SARS1 took about 15 years to find the bat population that it came from, Hendra Virus which is a location very close to me it was instant that they identified it was transferred from horses to humans because the outbreak was in a racing stable with lots of sick horses and I think it was fairly soon after that they found the virus in bats, it's actually a very common virus in bats so probably it killed the occasional person for decades and was only discovered due to the specific outbreak in Hendra , Brisbane, Australia. Most Zoonotic viruses would probably be undiscovered, it's only when there is a major outbreak they get noticed. With Hendra virus there is no known case of human to human transmission which of course is the key normally to having a major outbreak in humans.
