It was a choice made by region, the European WHO region and PAHO Pan-American Health Organization region countries almost universally agreed to open borders with 10 days voluntary quarantine and got the expected results but supposedly much more freedom and less mental health issues ( that is the official stated reason in the EU and US at least). The West Pacific WHO region countries decided on limited travel in most cases only allowing citizens and permanent residents to enter with 14 days mandatory enforced (usually hotel ) quarantine. This region is from China to New Zealand and all countries in between , ASEAN is split between 2 regions. The worst performing country Philippines is at less than 10% deaths per capita compared to poorly performing US and most Western European countries.

The entire Western Pacific WHO region was proactive from China down to New Zealand, not all managed elimination however the worst performing country Philippines has less than 10% the deaths on a per capita basis compared to US and much of Western Europe.

@Rayblondie A partial lockdown , in other words not a lockdown with open borders , complete free travel and voluntary quarantine is pointless, the evidence is overwhelming on this one. If you aren't going to do the job properly there is some evidence just decide ok we will kill 0.2% of the population get over it. The UK still has an open border policy without quarantine , just picking on very high case countries which is pointless when you need 0 cases because 1 case can become 1,000 in a week under the right conditions. Edit: on the vaccine front it does look like the UK will be one of the first country of more than 10,000,000 ( Israel) to reach herd immunity through vaccines and that's great, US although vaccinating at a similar rate is less certain because of vaccine hesitancy. This of course is if no variant evades the vaccines and is looking like they won't but not a certainty.

@damianpos8832 Places that had lockdowns (Western Pacific region countries) are mostly completely open internally. I couldn't find the episode of that person you talk of but I would suggest, almost 2,000,000,000 of the most diverse populations on the planet would indicate that border quarantine and lockdowns work fine and leads to much less lockdown than lockdown lite jurisdictions that never lock down. Death rate per million in the worst country the Philippines is still less than 10% of US and most of Western Europe. Here's some demographics, Fat people Australia and New Zealand and fattest in the world some Pacific Island nations, skinny people Japan the thinnest rich nation on earth, Poor people in Philippines, Vietnam and PNG along with others, rich people in Australia , New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Japan. Dark skinned people in Melanesia and some South Asian immigrants in other countries, Light skinned in East Asia and elsewhere, Sun loving in Australia , New Zealand, Philippines etc. , hate sun females in east Asia to keep skin like K-pop idols. Weather, temperate with Snow East Asia, Tropical Singapore right on equator, and everything in between. Surely out of all these variables someone in our region would be at risk. We all have one thing in common and that's border policies, internal policies do differ somewhat however 5 major jurisdictions are virus free and the worst in our region is still far better than elsewhere in the world.

@Rayblondie I am sorry you have the government you have but I just looked up the so called red countries, missing all of Europe and all of North America, so if a UK citizen or permanent resident wishes to return to the UK from these areas then no problems, just 10 days self quarantine with family or friends who are already in England who have no restrictions other than normal. That will stop nothing just slightly slow the spread down and as we know the US only has 10 days entirely voluntary quarantine from any country as long as US citizen. With an open border (no requirement for hotel quarantine) with any country, the virus can spread freely between those countries. As of about mid January Australia had put 215,000 people through hotel quarantine so I expect over 250,000 now which is 1% of our population. About 50% of the hotel quarantine breeches have been the UK variant, it spreads super easy. Hopefully we won't have that problem any more because hotel quarantine and border workers would all be vaccinated I expect. I hope your country gets back to relative normal soon and truly fingers crossed no variant that can evade vaccines. Australia is well behind you guys on vaccinations so going to be a fair while before hotel quarantine ends and I guess depends on if vaccines stop spread to an extent, which is entirely unknown at the moment.

@brianfretwell3886 it only takes one case to get in, I searched to see if it has been detected in Australia yet, couldn't find that answer but an interesting article popped up , Australia has maximum variants (largest number of different variants of concern detected by any country I think they mean). We genomic test every positive and if it's detected in Australia it's already spreading in Europe and US as a general rule, but in open borders countries a variant has to show it's worth because of all the competition.

@ianbcnp I don't mind daver ok that much, at least he doesn't actually personally attack those with different opinions and as long as it isn't a screen name of a prime minister or president or something he does no harm in my opinion. His points are generally technically valid, however often like a positive test doesn't mean someone has the disease which is correct but completely irrelevant because people aren't being put on ventilators because of a positive pcr test, they get put on a ventilator because a medical person observes that they are dying, others are told or forced depends on the country to quarantine so they don't spread it if the person is still infectious.

@Rayblondie I don't think there is any conspiracy but can understand why after a year people are wondering why your ( any actually) government isn't up to speed running like a well oiled machine on the issue. The main point is it's a year on, every government made mistakes from January to March last year with the possible exceptions of Taiwan and Vietnam but a year later if it's a wealthy country what's the excuse.

It's the other way around, the virus can only spread 10 metres or so, certain countries are making sure all mutations reach 3 continents in particular , Europe and the Americas with open border policies with only voluntary quarantine in almost all cases.

@sharkymoon422 so according to what you just stated infections are at least 10 fold the official cases, that's pretty scary.
