They're under reported everywhere. The Chief Health Officer in Queensland says it very directly, it's a major undercount and we getting as of a few days ago those crazy positivity rates above 30%. They've changed how they process PCR tests , previously put maybe 20 not sure how many together and if it has a positive case then retest those 20 individual ones, now because every batch would come back positive they test every one individually which slows it down significantly.

I think QLD we just encourage it, not an unenforceable mandate. The main reason they want it reported is so they can get health staff to call them and see if they need any attention. Everywhere has had people dying at home with covid 19 and doing this process should reduce it.

We are in a much better position than the US and although it's taken a while due to conspiracy theories mostly our indigenous population has a reasonable vaccination rate which will be high soon. A big issue in WA , NT and QLD is communities a long way from major hospitals, having to transport more than a handful of people in a day to city hospitals is not easy. That's the main fear. I am in Brisbane, literally 3 major public hospitals within a 10 minutes ambulance trip, city people take it for granted , we have small population centres in Australia 500 k's from a big hospital and sometimes further. Our medical staff aren't burnt out like the US other than a few in Sydney and Melbourne, the rest of the country the workforce will have much higher moral than the US. We are going to have significant deaths and for all the previously covid 0 placed it's going to be hard mentally for some.
