The plan is elimination, they just don't want to say it because certain publics don't want hear that because think impossible and also the plan might not work. The plan is almost a carbon copy of what we did in Queensland Australia a year ago but far fewer cases and no vaccine. The 5 week gaps are not only scientific reasons but to give people something to look forward to and also to hopefully achieve better results than required for each measure. So keep your chin up this plan seems real with a good chance of success.

Well the UK has just changed direction, they are going for elimination but not calling it that.

@toby9999 the opening up isn't that quick and every week over 1% of the population gets vaccinated which is likely to accelerate. I give them a reasonable chance of elimination if the time line is stuck to.

Next virus gone and system eliminated.

But it will be true.

@Jill-jb1jg Well if Australia can do it certainly North Korea can it's borders at least as hard to pass as Western Australia when had cases in other states last year and goods delivery by road would be no different between North Korea and China to Western Australia and other states. Internal travel restrictions which were quite tight in Western Australia in their original lockdown would have also been tight in North Korea as they usually are. Certainly North Korea will have other disease problems but covid 19 won't be one of them, I would bet my house on it. I am not from Western Australia but use them as an example because literally their border was as hard to cross. A Queensland billionaire took the state of Western Australia to the high court of Australia over the issue because he was annoyed he couldn't go there and do political campaigning and he lost. Queensland only had maybe 10 cases or something at the time.

@Jill-jb1jg Well I just googled it and read a few articles and they are locked down big-time, they have even stopped most goods entering the country at this time. The border was shut to China on January 22 . The quarantine period for North Korea is 30 days unlike the standard 14 days for the Western Pacific region. There are no confirmed reports , only speculation that they might have had cases. They did lockdown one city because of a suspected case. The only way the virus could really get in is by a smuggler because no doubt the tiny bit of trade has extreme quarantine measures. The illegal fishing by North Koreans in Russian waters has declined 95% and fishing overall by 50%. They did shoot some South Korean public servant in the border area at sea and burnt his body, which they apologized for. If I was a smuggler and thought I had covid 19 under such circumstances I would self isolate until I feel 100% because my life depends on it. I agree it's possible that they might have had an unreported case or 2 knowingly or unknowingly but under such strict measures the virus can't spread so they would get rid of any outbreak easily.

@Jill-jb1jg I would say the real risks as usual in places that have problems would be child malnutrition and childhood diseases, nothing directly to do with covid 19 but the possible effects of whatever North Korea is up to being totally shut off without even aid agencies there.

@katiehettinger7857 you're confusing wealth and technology, Thailand during I think it was 2011 floods was producing 60% of computer processing chips in the world. Just like Vietnam a much poorer country makes LG and Samsung smart phones. Thailand was the first country outside of China to discover a case of covid 19. By February 21 Thailand had discovered more than twice as many cases as the US. One could actually argue the low tech approach of the US partly caused it's problems, they only did 500 tests by the end of February for a country of 330,000,000 compared to about 100,000 tests in South Korea, about 10,000 tests in Australia and about 13,000 tests in the UK. Couldn't find the Thai number but fair to say the US was decidedly developing country status in this part of the response, they had coded the proteins or whatever for the Moderna vaccine back on January 15 which was only 2 days after getting the genetic sequence from China so great at vaccines though. Thailand did however rely much more on lockdown compliance and never did any real mass testing except maybe recently.

Whatever happens it will still be birds of a feather flocking together, 0 case countries won't let any high case country travellers in without hotel quarantine vaccine or not, it's just not going to happen, but between high case countries it likely will. All depends whether vaccines really work, we will see after Israel and the Palestinian population are all vaccinated if they go to 0 cases or not. I think they are likely to be the first place where full vaccine rollout has occurred but also depends on their take up rate.

North Korea will have no cases, the other problems are probably terrible right now but at least they don't have to worry about covid 19. Yes North Korea has border controls and internal movement controls if required (this is actually the normal state of North Korea so of course can do it) If Australia and NZ can do it why would you think China , Vietnam or North Korea couldn't, they are actually a little more authoritarian despite some people thinking Australia or NZ must be more authoritarian at the moment. Authoritarian governments have done better overall.
