@silverbladeTE I am not from there but they are my countrymen so I am going to speak on their behalf " we of Darwin Northern Territory Australia are getting tired of being associated with idiots , no cases of community transmission for 90 days and everything is open , even can travel freely to some other Australian states now, If the world could become virus free like Darwin then they might deserve a prestigious Darwin award".

It's the same anywhere, you lose tourism and all of Australia relies on population increase to produce demand through immigration which obviously isn't occurring now. Without commenting on our economic model in general terms clearly the longer this continues the more economic damage in the short to medium term. The countries least affected have low international tourism and don't rely on migration.

These responses are just silly. Ireland is similar to New Zealand as far as being an island with low population, so why couldn't they do it? Also just look at every state in Australia and Taiwan and Thailand and Vietnam ( although Thailand might get problems soon with political unrest) All of Western Europe and US don't have quarantine, so they can never get rid of the virus it's an impossibility. It's not about the size or population of a country if you have a city of 1,000,000 or more. Puerto Rico it should have been far easier than NZ but that's just another US disaster. Don't disregard the successful countries because they did things your country refuses to do.

Not sure if you use the same term over there but alcoholic drinks are often in six packs, maybe whoever made the decision was having a few beers purely for research purposes and came up with the idea when they went to the fridge to grab the next 6 pack , but thought ok , rule of six because six pack could be called sick pack too easily. That's my theory and I am sure you agree it makes a lot of sense.

@broadaccent the 700 that died from the flu , so what? In Australia with covid 19 without restrictions it would be 25,000 dead, with relaxed restrictions in the order of the Swedish model 14,000 dead, we kept it to about 1,000 so far which I think is great. Every country is up sh+t creek without an effective vaccine because even somewhere like New York it's estimated only 20% got infected and it's possible enough time has passed and they can get reinfected and be carriers of the virus, walking biohazards for the vulnerable. That we don't really know maybe reinfection will be really low, the whole thing is no real knowledge , only parameters are known so worst case versus best case. People whinge and complain about 14 days quarantine but it was less than 100 years ago people would spend a month or so on some ship packed in like sardines I expect to come to Australia for £10 and escape Europe. Also I haven't heard Aussies or Kiwis desperately trying to run to one of the infected northern hemisphere countries, fleeing the oppression in Australia. It's quite remarkable sometimes people in places that are constantly locked down with who knows what restriction next week caring about a few Aussies getting locked up or arrested meanwhile even in Victoria the sun is about to shine with freedoms not enjoyed in many countries, just the border restrictions.

@broadaccent Majority of people are happy with the low restrictions in Australia and accept the border restrictions. It's true Victoria went through a rough time but looking like it's over and a few weeks they should be like the rest of the country although I think New South Wales might have a few cases floating around. Low restrictions 90% of the time and a rapid response to any outbreak including lockdown if required for the 10% of the time is ok. It's not only Australia and NZ, quite a few Asian countries have the same strategy. Time will tell who does best and in the meantime I will enjoy my states low internal restrictions. The other thing is we learn how to be more effective at dealing with outbreaks so maybe don't need any more hard lockdowns but depends on each state how they respond. WA is too tough on its border restrictions, I'll probably be able to go to NZ before WA.

@broadaccent Restrictions in all states of Australia except Victoria are approximately the same to Sweden except for example football games can have 30,000 or 40,000 or so , same as New Zealand. So are you suggesting we should abandon our plan, get infected have 13,000 people die and lower access to healthcare and put our nursing homes into full lockdown? For all that we get open borders without quarantine, doesn't sound crash hot to us and pretty sure the Australian population won't just have 13,000 more deaths because we would more likely behave like Americans or Britons causing much death than the per capita Swedish toll. Where Sweden is now just carry on I guess and it would appear contact tracing and testing is actually quite functional there at this point and it would appear a high level of voluntary compliance with restrictions. Your model doesn't translate well to many countries actually. Also demographics suggest we would likely have more die due to demographics, the obesity rate in Sweden is very low.

@broadaccent To use quotes from your chief health or whatever he's called the intention in Sweden is to leave restrictions exactly where they are until a vaccine comes, also he says until it's all over we should not judge any approach because the most effective strategy will only be known after the fact. Another thing is from what is known Sweden has only had about 10% of people get the virus so a long way from herd immunity but yes technically better than about 0.1%. Best of luck, we won't know for quite some time which approach was best with certainty and also consider 1 approach doesn't fit all, because different demographics and cultures so maybe Sweden's approach is good for Sweden and Aus/NZ approach along with our Asian neighbours is good for us. The UK, France , Spain and US etc. approaches seem the worst of both worlds to me. So we agree on something I guess.

You can, it's just you don't want to. Mandatory quarantine means locking someone in a hotel room for 14 days and that hasn't been tried over there. At the time the Australian interstate borders all closed but one about 20 US states didn't even have the virus all those low population states in the center of the US mainland just sat there waiting to be infected at the same time saying how great they were because they are Republican and look at New York and California. It never had to happen in at least half the US which actually had plenty of time to prepare. Anyway best of luck and take care of yourself.

@colliecoform4854 your constitution is similar to ours it just guarantees free trade between states. Governments can do anything for quarantine purposes so long as they are reasonable. In Australia there hasn't been any restrictions on interstate trade other than tourism and of course precautions are taken with trucks or planes delivering things interstate. If you can declare a curfew like has been done in some US cities to stop riots , you can certainly require someone to quarantine for 2 weeks if they enter your state, it's all a choice. Otherwise let's say your neighboring state had an outbreak of another virus that killed 10% of the population and had an extremely slow incubation time and 30 % of the population are actually asymptomatic. That means you would just allow it to spread throughout the country killing 20,000,000 people if you were correct. Do you really believe the government has such little power this would occur? Do you believe the CDC is lying when they say an area can be quarantined by the Federal or a state government. Common sense tells you this would not occur.
