In a way I would of countries like UK or US just make a decision, going half way doesn't work. Swedish model or New Zealand model , pick one and follow it. Probably too late for New Zealand model and impossible to achieve which leaves possibly only one realistic option.

Restrictions changing everywhere all the time, nobody can keep up with more than a few jurisdictions. If restrictions are reducing because case numbers lower it's a good thing.

The proven method is movement restrictions and comprehensive lockdown if required, test trace and contain. It is actually quite simple in a wealthy country, the difficulty is if the public service or politicians have an alternative plan and refuse to change course quickly when failures occur. Note the plan has been up to this point in time in the UK, basic mitigation only.

Just regarding the covi sars2 response, I think you could pick 2 random 10 year olds to lead the US and UK and at worst not notice the difference in leadership style or effectiveness.

I think it's extremely difficult to go from a relaxed policy to a hard policy. Victoria Australia has this problem and is overcoming it but a lot of angry people. I am in another state Queensland that was far more strict first time round than Victoria with real penalties and enforcement. Victoria has introduced tougher legislation and enforcement policies actually somewhat equivalent to most other Australian states for fixing the problems that arose. So although we can see this example in Australia you can see it very clearly at the country levels, the so called dictatorships have much more internal freedoms but significant border restrictions in all cases. The free countries in particular US and UK have a focus on freedoms and have much higher restrictions internally because the virus is rampant and virtually no border restrictions and a next to 0 enforcement policy of the internal restrictions( as you just said orders are meaningless because everyone knows the government is weak and won't do anything to individuals ). In simple terms total disfunction of government. Once government puts in laws and then openly ignores their own laws , that's what true disfunction is.

Maybe a good name for a cocktail. 2 shots scotch whiskey, 2 shots dark rum , one shot of vodka served on ice with a slice of lime or lemon. Drink that you can think you're on the moon no problems.

I just looked up what shoot for the moon means and it seems to have different meanings, the one I think of is go for broke, or risk everything, but an alternative meaning says go for it and it will succeed in some way. So I think the interpretation can cause a person to think differently. Not sure if in UK if the saying always has the meaning that is preferable, seems it might, but if it doesn't then not exactly good name.
