The European lockdowns are half arsed at best for most countries, a lower level of half arsed approach gets approximately the same results. The one problem with the US is 300,000,000 people with absolutely no travel restrictions, even internationally. Apparently the voluntary quarantine upon entry will become less voluntary as in the government might monitor it a bit and give out fines according to Biden plan. But we know that's probably not going to happen because who's going to do it, the national guard is the only possibility. The classic I saw is someone flying from Argentina to Florida to get their free vaccine, an Argentinian of course. So every virus strain on the planet gets to compete in the US. As far as rioting that's normal now, Antifa types still rioting in Portland after Joe Biden is in, they do wear sturdy clothing, masks and often goggles though , so at least they got something right even if it's for the wrong reason.

@christopherrobinson7541 what you say is interesting, however if based on what we know there are about 6 strains that are significantly different, 2 or 3 inside the US undiscovered because not enough sampling that's about 1 new one a month (90% or so of infections in last 6 months). On this basis you would need to add an extra strain every month. So that doesn't seem feasible while cases are so high. I am talking of the US situation because it accepts all new strains into the country.

@M9dq76 There is a thing called quarantine, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan all have no cases just occasionally a quarantine breach , of course it's not normal and difficult to have high numbers of people, only repatriation . After vaccines available maybe if they are as effective as suggested then no need for or can reduce requirements for 14 days hotel quarantine.

@stephenbirchall941 Normally it's stated " should still work on the different strains" this is very different wording to "should be just as effective on different strains" should still work means above 50% efficacy, it doesn't even imply that it will work as well. Have to listen to exact wording. The biggest problem is if absolute openess occurs then more questions and they don't know the answers it's truly a matter of wait until we have enough real world data and see. They can do a dozen test tube experiments but that only gives an indication otherwise no need for phase 3 trials at all. No phase 3 trial is complete in the first place hence emergency use only except for Sputnik in Russia, I think they skipped the emergency use part.
