It's at completely different levels in different countries, I suspect the Universities being partly funded by pharmaceutical companies however is probably near universal because that model of partnership is everywhere I think. One thing you forgot to mention and I'm guessing you're from the US , your insurance companies push prices up too. It's a fallacy that they care about healthcare costs because it's a commission business , if healthcare costs rise they put the premiums up by the same percentage, the bigger the pie the better, if healthcare in the US cost $500 per person per year it would be a disaster for the insurance companies, they could only charge $550 maximum with an excellent margin of 10% but only $50.
