Well as far as I am aware, not a single symptom exists if you get HIV, whereas this virus causes mild to extreme symptoms directly for it's estimated 80% of the population. Obviously without a test these 80% may well have another virus so of course a test is required to know if it is covi sars2.

@gerttopmuller Crimson king is ok and being reasonable and believes even the virus kills another 1,000,000 Americans then that's fine and nothing should be done about it. The 1% rate overall is probably about right, because the rate for people below 40 is way below that, probably about 0.05% but in the over 70s it may well be well over 1%. While I don't agree with crimson that 1,000,000 dead people in the is ok at least they are not denying reality. I am in Australia and we have had a different approach to the US and Europe.

Kiri N That's my point, needing a test and direct symptoms doesn't indicate anything about how deadly a virus might be.

If you believe that to be the case then the US president looks even worse. So even if he has the mental capacity of a 10 year old China shut down Wuhan so obviously China indicated it was dangerous although they reacted a bit slowly. It's now almost 8 months and Trump has decided during the entire timeline that restrictions are not required in the US to contain the virus along with full support of every US governor who hasn't put in compulsory government supervised hotel quarantine on those entering their state. Mitigation is the catchphrase really and not a single US governor wanted containment. Masks are only a minor argument at the edges, because they only slow the spread , not stop it. So the US policy actually has full bipartisan support and anyone on either side of the fence is a hypocrite if they blame the other side entirely.

Cyrs M Well to use a business term Trump is an excellent salesmen with very few peers. To use the political term Trump has proven to be excellent at propaganda. I hope my simple explanation helps you understand Trump. He is not cut out to manage a factory floor or a farm or a government but he is excellent at a particular task. Problem really is that he's been picked for the wrong job. Just because of what he does excel at doesn't mean it can win him the next election and doesn't mean he can't, have to see.

hellasow But it's impossible that every single person would get it, so you can't say that 1% of the population could die if the mortality rate is 1%.

hellasow Yes with zero measures it could get close to 100% of the population in a city where it's impossible to stop it spreading with minor measures. In rural areas however I think you would find for example many older farmers would probably protect themselves well and won't get it. In any city greater than maybe 200,000 or so it's really difficult because people interact a lot. Australia has gone down a different route to the US which I describe as containment versus the US model of mitigation only, however one Australian state Victoria did have very significant problems but now is looking like they will get things under control, but it means very serious intervention measures you will not see in any mainland US state even a nighttime curfew. Border restrictions between different jurisdictions are very important a measure that no US state is willing to take.
