  1. The thing is in countries that contained the virus are more open except for travel. To get to that point a proper lockdown is required which includes shutting down the economy for a period until contact tracing can work and border restrictions based on jurisdiction which in the US means states. The US decided on no lockdown and continuous lockdown lite with constantly changing restrictions. The containment countries do no appear to be suffering from increased violence , suicides etc. however economic effects are similar but probably slightly less. It was a bipartisan action in the US to go down the mitigation path despite the Spanish flu suggesting containment states of the day did better economically with faster rebounds.
