  1. It's nuanced. The government puts the rules and regulations in place which creates either a more competitive environment or a less competitive environment. The government also regulates monopolies such as utilities like water and electricity if privatised. I am Australian and we have a more competitive environment for things such as agriculture, supermarkets or at least many of the products stocked in supermarkets being cheaper which is actually a surprise because wages are lower in the US. The US has more import tariffs than Australia already which along with New Zealand and Singapore can be considered a truly free trade nation. Trump plans a big socialist experiment by putting tariffs on everything imported. This virtual removal of competition will dramatically reduce competition and higher input costs for manufacturers importing goods and lead to price rises. Even something like ground beef which the US imports from various countries like Australia will go up in price. So if Trump does what he says you should complain to him when burgers get more expensive. Because there's no plan to increase minimum wages places such as Burger King and McDonald's will suffer or be selling more chicken which the US produces very cheaply.
