In Australia all elections are run that way, We call it preferential voting, has other names also like instant run off. It's better because then especially in the US case a third presidential candidate who every knows won't win could still get 10 or 20% of the vote and show the big party's how many don't actually prefer either of them but all those votes will count towards the second most desirable candidate. Another thing is for state and federal elections we have compulsory voting although the term is inaccurate actually it's really compulsory attendance and get your name crossed off and do whatever you want with the voting paper because it's secret anyway, there's always bins around voting booths for those that want to bin it and or the how to vote cards political party's try to hand out. Most people in reality if they are there will vote but the informal votes (that's either deliberately or accidentally not voting properly so it doesn't count) can go up to 5% or so if people really annoyed with all politicians. You would need at least legislative changes and maybe even constitutional changes to adopt similar voting methods to a country like Australia.
