@nomad7540 it had already spread inside China at that stage and the 20 Jan closedown of Wuhan was not a secret. Countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia , Australia and New Zealand just happened to do things differently. 4 of those countries are now virus free most likely and in Australia's case we have one state that's having some problems due to stuff ups. That state would be rated maybe number 3 in success if it was a US state. The US failed and to be fair not entirely Trump's fault but he didn't make anything better.

According to Trump's previous comments any number less than 2,000,000 is a good job and many lives have been saved.

It may well become the US virus because they are likely to eventually have their own dominant strain. Maybe just the US strain.

The US performed worst for a high income country on HIV because in that case they let it rip through the intravenous drug users taking years to hand out needles. There are certainly comparisons to be made and the outcomes are consistent.

Italy, Spain and UK don't tell the world they are exceptional. This issue is technically no different to the US homicide rate for a high income country. A lot of Americans live in their bubble with an air of superiority. Even now it's rare to hear them talk about all the possible vaccine candidates around the world because they believe they are the best. It's true if a vaccine does work or more than one that the US due to shear numbers will be on the list but it doesn't make them superior just equal. On a personal level if someone looks down at you and treats you as inferior will you have the same feelings to that person when compared to another person who considers you or at least treats you as an equal?

@kbthegoat824 American exceptionalism is another word for superiority. I did qualify my point saying many not all. I don't have an issue personally, Australia is your equal , just our country is smaller.

That's more than a circumnavigation of the planet going the long way around the equator.

While India s number might be a little less accurate it would be ball park correct and I would expect death certificates are being done in the same way as the US. The guidelines say if it's highly probable then putting covid 19 is appropriate, in India I would expect the same convention to be being used.

No that's completely wrong, some are as you say but many like a nursing home resident it's completely out of their control. In Australia if one staff member at a hospital or nursing home is infected the entire staff will go into isolation for 2 weeks and the staff completely replaced. The US doesn't have this capability as far as I know.

American exceptionalism is based on gross numbers not per capita. If you look at the number of inventions or scientific break throughs the US is in line with any Western democracy and is probably towards the the best on a per capita basis but nothing exceptional. This is in part why it's hard for them to even understand the concept. Now they are grappling with it so they can say they are not the worst, but on a per capita mortality rate they are at 10 and rising. It's not really a fair comparison and if it is NY is double that of any country on the planet.
