Not if you have a containment strategy and get numbers low enough, see West Pacific countries.

Sweden is less dense and also higher compliance of voluntary measures, Sweden isn't looking too bad but the culture of the population makes a big difference.

@chipsnestle8770 History is on our side, the states with higher restrictions in the US during the Spanish flu recovered more quickly. Things have changed a lot since then but the underlying principles are likely still the same. From Australia

@ghostridersinthesky21 I didn't say the virus will go away because it would be unrealistic to think all countries could eliminate it. All I say is it can be eliminated in a country. This is unlikely to occur in any European countries. Greece was looking ok but seems they have given up. If you look at their current numbers and compare to Victoria Australia, it's still technically possible for them to eliminate it because they are not as bad as Victoria got and Victoria is now at about 10 cases per day and looking good for elimination however it's not a certainty until they do it. Greece would need another hard lockdown so looks like they won't bother. Of course living in a virus free state within Australia I sort of feel privileged because everywhere the virus is rampant higher restrictions and many problems with the exception of Florida with a no restrictions let it rip policy at the moment which is likely to just see cases explode in aonth or so. I am ok with the travel restrictions because having the virus rampant is worse.

@hendrikdependrik1891 in Victoria Australia they openly said any more than 50 cases a day in a population of 6.5 million contact tracing can't work, it's just too difficult, evidence would bear this out , no jurisdiction with significant case numbers achieves much at all with contact tracing.
