  1. Doesn't work like that, many bat species have a very large range and the virus could even be in multiple species. So unless the bat is relatively rare it might narrow it down to 10 or 20 countries , although it's not impossible an outbreak is found within that prior to the Wuhan outbreak it's probably unlikely. The only known thing is the initial large outbreak was in Wuhan almost certainly, could be it mutated there. The comments in the thread are all that the CPC knows but no evidence either way and if they don't know they can't prove it, they can only prove a positive if they do know. If the bat species is no where near China then their cold food theory will have some evidence.

If you look at the speed of spread, it could easily have been in the countryside somewhere inside or outside China for months without being detected, it's only when you hit a big city or things like nursing homes or hospitals it explodes, plus seasonal factors. We wait I guess to see if they find a virus close enough in a bat to possibly narrow down the region.
