Yes 1,000 people commit a crime and lock up 1,000,000 people for re education, that makes sense and is an abuse of human rights. If China only locked up criminals nobody would say anything.

This is not correct, the entire population must go through re education for the purposes of learning Chinese and to stop extremism , nothing to do with whether a person had committed a crime. I remember seeing an interview and a person's mother who was a communist party member and a teacher was still sent to a re education camp. So it appears like mandatory 1 year prison which it is regardless of the reason.

@wissembourggirl The entire population of a certain age has to spend 1 year going through re education and it's estimated that 1,000,000 at any given time. I am not saying that's accurate and given these types of issues it's probably larger than the real number. If for arguments sake it's 100,000 only it's still the same thing and doesn't make it good. According to China's official population numbers there are 12,000,000 ethnic Uyghurs in Xingjiang , so 1,000,000 isn't outside the bounds of possibilities because they wouldn't want the program to continue forever and out of the 12,000,000 maybe 4,000,000 or so might be in the target age range that this is occurring to.

@rayz6724 As I said it's a general estimate used by many media organization. Do you know how many are being put through re education 24/7 hours detainment and re education required and the other group permitted to return home daily? Maybe China should release such numbers , both are a violation of human rights if no offence has occurred however one situation is much worse than the other.
