I'm an Aussie and on this issue i am on China's side. While i don't like China's subsidies i also don't like US subsidies although i have to admit in some ways they both advantage Australia in some ways as a free trade economy with very limited subsidies.

@tooltalk every country in the world with an auto industry subsidises that industry in one way or another, but quite often through a minimum of 2 methods, tax breaks and some protection measures. Australia only benefits from this. Where we don't benefit is for example competing against subsidised US agriculture. Many countries significantly subsidise agriculture but it doesn't affect Australia because they aren't exporting.

@tooltalk I never said anything was illegal. Not particularly liking something doesn't make it illegal. What exactly do you think isn't true?

@DLL-y4p That's a strange comment you have. Maybe you are a MAGA Australian want the US to hurt us. I know such people do exist.

@Propakistani1224 Nothing to do with any individual country. I don't like subsidies because they usually make low income people poorer and rich people richer. Maybe you support Chinese and American billionaires and that is your right, I personally don't agree with making them richer at low income people's expense. Having said that if the subsidy is only a tax break for a limited time for a new industry , for example electric vehicles at the moment I think that's ok.

@tooltalk I think you will find all car manufacturers are subsidised or protected in some way, other vehicles not always. Subsidies are never illegal, it's only an issue with trade agreements where one country subsidises something or not but is perceived to have and the other country puts a tariff on that product leading to a dispute.

@fungj4126 not in the market for a car but if I was I would buy a BYD Dolphin for around $20,000 USD new.

@Mano-z7t The only subsidies of note that exist in Australia are for social welfare and environmental reasons. While I might disagree sometimes these types of subsidies aren't aimed at helping billionaires and are aimed at low and middle income people. Those types of subsidies are generally fine. If as we used to subsidise car production in Australia I would be against that and was against it at the time it was occurring. So my more nuanced position is certain subsidies are ok if for the correct reason, if they are to prop up unprofitable businesses then I am against them and Australia doesn't do this to any great extent. The only other thing is national security and making sure certain things are produced in a country especially regarding military equipment is ok even though it's protectionism.

@fungj4126 There was a reason China put some sanctions on Australian and that was because we called for an investigation into the origins of covid 19. Personally I think the Chinese overreacted.
