Thailand might have "a mountain of debt" however for 2020 the government had a lower budget deficit to GDP than the other countries you mentioned and have a lower debt to GDP ratio than the other countries you mentioned. It's true the tourism sector was hit extremely hard and made up a fairly high contribution to the economy previously. So I think your premise or at least what you inferred was incorrect. Better to compare most European countries to a country like Australia actually because closing borders for most of those countries would have produced a better balance of trade, Australia's trade surplus actually increased and a contributing factor was we are a net importer of tourism as in spend more traveling outside Australia than tourists entering Australia. The UK I am pretty sure would have had similar results in that sector if they followed the same policy because they travel to cheaper destinations also.

@stunstar4553 read my comment again, I said contributing factor, yes resources and agricultural products sales already produced a surplus. Chinese trade sanctions against Australia towards the end of the calendar year reduced it slightly compared to not having sanctions.
