That means you are buying the bottom of the barrel stuff. Industrial production of grapes isn't that expensive. Australia has extremely low subsidies on agriculture, mostly research however the US has high subsidies in a relative sense, the free market works, paying people to grow corn to produce ethanol with almost no energy gain from energy inputs is an example of socialist madness. Those corn crops might be displacing other crops of higher value and do push up the price of land.

@vtep6899 No but think carefully why attack Australia in other ways at this point in time? Australia unfortunately has been successful in dealing with Covid 19. The US and UK already look useless. It's also to send a message who is the boss , so if Australia backs down other countries scared to say anything. Because we probably don't matter to the rest of the world , the target audience might be ASEAN countries and or could be European countries. One statement made by China is that somehow an increasing defence relationship between Australia and Japan is a threat to China. A nuclear power is scared of 2 countries with combined military personnel of 400,000 or so versus the 2.8 million strong Chinese military, doesn't ring true to me.

Um actually the US exports cheaper wine to China than Australia or at least did. Based on 2018/2019 the US was Australia's second biggest export market for Australian wine making up 15% by value. So even the Americans think our wine is pretty good. Wine is a selective thing anyway, with 2 components at the high end, marketing and quality. Mass market house wine is just making an ok product for a cheap price, I think Australia generally markets it's middle to high value wines overseas.

@james-yj7gp mate you do know Australia and Indonesia are on the same side, listen to your president's speech at UNGA , the reference to territory was directed at China same to Australia's speech and president of Philippines. The 2 main issues we have with China is expansion in the South China Sea ( taking ASEAN countries territory) and human rights inside of China. We should stand together against China if they do the wrong thing.

China isn't open to Australia, can Australia just go and invest in any mainland China company without restrictions, no , can any Western nation bid to build 5 g networks inside China, again no. Can Australia control every MP and stop them from speaking things, again no we are a liberal democracy. China views anything said by any MP as the government position, as a one party authoritarian state no one is permitted to speak anything but the official line and seems to think we are the same. Australia is the last Western Democracy of any size left standing in successfully dealing with covid 19 and our allies are quite weak at the moment, particularly the US. Best to apply pressure to us and at the same time favour the US with trade, maybe we will fight each other but we won't. I think things will calm a little by about February when the US should be a little more stable than now or hopefully they are.

@Gasanwu As a general rule no foreign company can go into China without 50% Chinese ownership in a joint venture, this is the arrangement with all the foreign carmakers. So no you can't just open up a business there. Tell me of the Chinese MP that has spoken against the CCP and not followed the party line, curious to know how that person is going in the communist party. Some backbencher can just say anything in Australia , it doesn't make it the government position. Otherwise why did the Chinese embassy say MP and not name them, was it for politeness and notably didn't say PM. Agree with you to a point on trade issues because the US is our competitor and was extremely quick to accept preferred supplier status with barley with the information on a US government website within 2 days of the Chinese announcement of tariffs against Australia. The trade versus security interests of Australia are difficult to juggle.

@Gasanwu As an Australian I am not too concerned with the goings on, it's rather ironic at the same time we are having a "trade war" we sign RCEP and hope for ratification by the end of next year according to our government website. I suspect some issues are cultural and China over reacts and gets offended about literally anything. In my region or in particular ASEAN countries the US has been non interventionist for a long time, I suspect it's sort of designated as Australia's area of responsibility and we are different to the US, the most obvious example is Australia and New Zealand restored diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1975, the US it was 1995, it's a bit like the US are poor losers and don't move on. I personally completely disagree with trade sanctions because it inevitably empowers any dictatorship by creating a common enemy and makes the normal people poorer, regimes are almost exclusively overthrown by the middle class not poor people. So keep everyone poor you will ensure the dictatorship survives. As bad as human rights are currently in China it's still a massive improvement on 30 years ago when they started to open to the world in ernest. I do think that a country like Australia should still point out what we consider wrong , it is important but no trade sanctions etc. Australia is very much a free trade country, see our rating on the Economic Freedom Index by Heritage Foundation. China has used this type of behaviour with other countries, can't remember the reason but they were annoyed with South Korea about something so China stopped all tourists going there which of course causes a significant shock. That's the aim here hurt us so we tow the line, however other than possibly the delivery of the message there is no difference in policy between the government and opposition parties and that applies to trade also.

@leoncutajar1369 The rise of China has helped Australia greatly and the mining industry , coal and iron ore has helped China greatly also. We both benefit and neither country wants to stop our overall beneficial relationship.

That would be a declaration of real war, iron ore is considered a national security item by China, so it would have the same status as oil for example.

Australian can't buy any mainland Chinese company outright so that's a 100% cancellation rate. Australian company or any non Chinese company can't bid to build 5g network in China. So you're comparing a somewhat open market to one with the door almost completely shut.

@jasonjean2901 Australian company can't buy any mainland China company, only a minority share. So yes if Australia block some Chinese transactions so what, many years ago we blocked Shell from buying out Woodside on the same grounds, this is normal. We are not compelled as a country to sell everything to foreigners , that would be ridiculous. There are very few countries in the world that foreigners can buy freehold land for example, well Chinese do own some freehold land in Australia and the other way round , I guess we have a long term lease on the embassy site which we can be thrown out of at a moment's notice. We haven't been kicked out so far , so we are still on talking terms even if it's a bit rocky.

@jasonjean2901 What's happening now is unfortunate , however things will sort themselves out. While not perfect Australia is very much free market orientated, China isn't doing this about trade anyway and knows our farmers aren't subsidised. With Huawei not being allowed to build the 5 g networks I do agree with this because it's a risk not worth taking. China would never in a million years allow a foreign company to build it's 5 g network and that's fair enough. Things will calm down over time it's not like China and Australia are going to abandon our trading relationship.

@jasonjean2901 I looked into anti dumping tariffs on the Australian side actually and the process seems quite robust. While you state 104 "investigations" , this is on a product by product basis and only seems to come about if a local manufacturer complains and it will be all companies and or countries selling that product into Australia, so out of the 104 I think you would find 80 or so is multiple countries , with multiple companies in each country normally and the remaining 24 China is the only exporter selling into the Australian market. Things can always be skewed , I haven't read the article you suggest yet but it already sounds alarmist , but I will search for it. Unless we refuse to export iron ore things will find a way of sorting themselves out.

It's more complicated than that, at the same time China pressures Australia it buys more agricultural products from USA. Notably the US is now a preferred supplier of barley announcement on US gov website within 2 days of tariffs against Australia, I think not some remarkable coincidence. Maybe China wants us to be angry with the US , that might play a part. What trade war has Australia launched? China is the one launching a trade war.

Trade and other issues are separate in Australia, we value China greatly as a 2 way trading partner, it doesn't follow that we agree on the Chinese system of government and their actions in our region regarding the South China Sea we are on those ASEAN countries who might be affected side, we are against human rights abuses inside China , in particular treatment of minorities and no religious freedom, of course these behaviours are incompatible with Australian values.
