Cut the primary inputs for a month I think you would reassess what you just said, without foreign oil and iron ore China has a great difficulty.

@evanzhang3801 All that might be good and well, of course nuclear energy requires uranium which needs to be imported, wind and hydro require a lot of steel , so need iron ore, China has a significant deficit in agricultural products, some of that being animal feed, so unless China becomes vegetarian it can't feed itself. For China to go it alone which isn't going to happen would require drops in living standards, probably quite significant. No country in the world can go it alone and maintain living standards, China and US probably the best able to due to size but as I said means living standards drops. I have no idea what dual circulation is , clearly that's some slogan and it's not used in Australia.

@evanzhang3801 Ok now you have told me the slogan means protectionism based on perceived security threats. It is however still just a slogan. Can't see any war happening other than cold war stuff which would be really bad for the 3 rd party country but nothing like US and China directly at war and if that was to happen the start of the war all electronic to try to shut down things like power stations and market and transport infrastructure, both countries do train for this but completely unknown how successful either side might be. China would have food problems almost immediately.

@evanzhang3801 China imported 28 million tonnes of grain including corn, wheat, barley and sorghum. This is not including soybeans. If we multiply 28,000,000,000 kg by 100 we get 2,800,000,000,000 kg of grain in total for the year using your 1% imports number. This suggests every Chinese person gets 2,000 kg of grain per year, your numbers don't ring true. Maybe 99% self sufficient with rice which got no mention in the article I read. One thing it did say though is China had 4 months stockpile of wheat at the time so it would appear there is a degree of having a strategic reserve, so I think fairer to say China in the event of a war would have serious food problems maybe 6 months in.

It's called coming from a low base, people are poorer and suffer more than in say a Western European country right now this day, but unlike 20 years ago at least it seems nobody starving.
