I was told by a person in Macao a little after both handed to China that the plan is by 2050 HK and Macao will be intergrated into China and the borders will open. I don't think it was intended that in 2050 China will become a democracy. China is playing a long game. Just take one freedom or bit of democracy each year. A tried and true method of control is to charge any opposition with unlawful behaviour, not only China does this. China is the most successful propaganda machine ever seen in history. They use non physical violence which gains much less attention. Re education camps with estimated 1,000,000 or 2,000,000 largely comprised of the Muslim minority, but includes anyone who disagrees with the Communist party. The wealthy in China don't care for the others and refer to them as immigrants when they come to work in the cities. They don't receive the same basic services such as healthcare compared to the non immigrants. China won't be changing in my lifetime I think.
