  1. The old man had days in which he could have contacted police about the scammers but he did nothing. These scams can't be done instantly because the victim needs to prepare the money. Given his age hopefully he goes to prison for the rest of his life. If he believed the phone controlled a $20 million military drone capable of blowing up his house he had already neutralised that threat. Sounds ridiculous right however at 81 one can quite often become quite delusional.

  3. Innocent until proven guilty, he should have been allowed to have a computer for his defence. If the case is so weak that it falls apart when the suspect views the evidence then obviously he should be found not guilty. Punishment should only occur after a conviction not before.
