You need a preferencial voting system or automatic run off , same thing but has different terminology in different places. But you also need one vote one person and for the Federal government to run it because eligibility differs in each state. Until those issues are fixed almost no candidate will be considered legitimate by all.

@oldfogey4679 the last election was not contested but quite a few people not happy winning popular vote by 3,000,000 which was a losing election. So there are many who would prefer a popular vote. As far as saying you don't trust the mob with nuclear weapons and a million strong army, instead you trust 50 different governments to carry out an election to a high standard is rather surprising and surprises me that anyone agrees that different rules for eligibility in all those states is seen as fair.
