Hate to burst your bubble , this is your normal. The US failed in its HIV response and allowed it to spread throughout the IV drug users for quite some time. A high income country acting different to other high income nation's who believed drug users are human first and took time to distribute clean needles. You will return to your normal when this is all finished most likely and next health or quarantine issue will be responded to in a similar manner. I hope I am wrong on that point.

You can put travel restrictions in place as NY has now done. The choice to allow infected people in without forced quarantine is exactly that a choice. In Australia every state now has border restrictions at least to some extent. That is why if you look at our state numbers the state that failed has over half of the total cases at this point in time. To leave that state you must go into quarantine of some sort for 2 weeks, in my state that is 14 days government supervised at your cost and plus 10 days if you refuse to be tested.

@kansasgoldilocks It is different. In my state Queensland their are police at a checkpoint on the border. If you don't have a pass to enter you get turned back . Basically the same restrictions between US and Canada. Goods and workers can cross but there is a process. If it's a traveller it depends where they come from how they are treated. If you lie you may face fines or jail time. Some people who lied and caused infections to re enter our state are going through that process. If you can bring in the military for riots I am sure if the police were not numerous enough they could be used. As a person in a state that is virus free ( hopefully given recent events) I am supportive of our border restrictions. I hope the vaccines coming work because if they don't it's probably years more of the same for you guys unless proper lockdown and travel restrictions which I see as unlikely.
