Not really, Putin did poorly and his government is in effect a one party system. Australia is a multi party system and all states except one have handled it as well as China while noting that the Wuhan officials didn't handle it well and probably caused some delay. This delay meant nothing to a country like the US which to this day only has voluntary quarantine, Biden says he will change things but I will believe it when I see it.

@andrewrichardson3135 what makes you think China lies about it's numbers, the deaths are consistent with known cases? The lockdown if Hebei province is as a result of cases, impossible to lock large cities down without any cases because even in a 1 party state people would ignore the directive. If there were provinces and cases were being covered up they would be like Wuhan was before in no time.

@andrewrichardson3135 I am not saying it's a free country or anything , just about this subject and authoritarian countries that took the virus seriously are very successful so that's consistent too, Vietnam and Taiwan are fairly authoritarian, same with Thailand. You don't have to be an authoritarian country to succeed however, Australia and New Zealand with higher levels of general freedoms of the above mentioned countries are successful too. No evidence any of these countries cover up numbers. The only place where numbers have been covered for a period and this is documented is Florida USA that withheld case numbers during the month of October last year to apparently check the numbers or something, after November 3 this problem was solved.

@tweedy4sg while most of what you say is correct one thing at the time that wasn't known that well was how many the lockdown itself would kill. In a population of 10,000,000 or so with such a hard oppressive lockdown you can expect quite a few people to die. Have to remember all medical care completely halted and even if an ambulance can get to someone on time for an urgent issue for a while no vacant ICU beds. This number has not been published as far as I am aware but it certainly occurred and would be more significant than any other lockdown in the world. In Australia in the first 6 months of the year had 1200 excess deaths and they showed a graph and the only time excess deaths occured was during lockdown and only about 100 deaths from covid 19 so it was not the cause. The causes of death that increased was heart attack and diabetes. The US CDC published excess deaths for January 26 to October 3 and it was 300,000 and only 200,000 were covid 19 deaths, so the rest is the lockdown lite and failure to contain the virus stressing people and less routine medical care I guess, not sure which causes of death rose. So the extra urns due to other deaths was a real thing because it happened virtually everywhere else and we don't know the number because they have not released it. It's things like that that cause some to be sceptical of China.

@jeschinstad All Western Europe and US still have to this day have no enforced quarantine, all the West Pacific from China to New Zealand and all countries in between do. We clearly have a different cultural attitude to such matters. Even Singapore started with a Swedish type approach , it had the ability to change approach, one thing most governments have failed at is to change policy even if they know it works. Japan has done ok but they also slow change and maybe they have lost control now, have to see 5,000 cases a day means contact tracing doesn't work properly any more, they protect the border well though so shouldn't get the really contagious strains but if they do then big problems. Thailand I think will regain control, maybe I am biased because of personal relationship there but they could go either way , Malaysia did really well as well for a long time but lost control. There is no other way to do it and I wish other countries outside our region would follow and at a minimum protect their borders from new strains but they won't, just half measures. Africa I don't follow but seems that they have kept the spread relatively low except for South Africa.

Without prejudice what US authorities did was far worse, Trump was involved in a six month cover-up and he was the leader continually saying it's harmless and his followers the lemmings followed him off the cliff. The Wuhan government did the same thing and got sacked which media doesn't ever mention. Trump got sacked I suppose but that's a lot of bodies later and him along with others allowed the virus to spread to every state and territory knowingly. Trump told blatant lies and we know it was intentional from the Woodward interview.

@andrewrichardson3135 you don't have to be, there are more internal freedoms in Australia than the US currently and sorry to inform you but you are more authoritarian than Australia already. You have 400,000 health prisoners which is possibly the highest rate in the world and certainly more than double the rate in Australia. Being a drug addict should not be considered a crime in my opinion however it's a difficult issue and not entirely against imprisonment if treatment occurs also. So freedom to infect but being a junkie that hurts nobody should be imprisoned apparently , does that make sense to you?

I ask you a question how many US citizens caught covid 19 in hospital which caused their deaths, we know it happened to 1,600 healthcare workers and we also know such events have been documented in Australia , Taiwan, Germany and UK. It's an impossibility it hasn't occured inside the US , yet not a single report of it. Is that a cover-up or is it ok because these matters have never been investigated inside of the US, just count the nursing home deaths yet nothing is done, hopefully many get vaccines now but my suspicion is in many states maybe not. Trump did the biggest cover up by telling his followers it was harmless and doing something about it is a Democrat hoax. Bad as the local Wuhan government was , they are a local government not the leader of a superpower and they got sacked, pretty sure they are not popular, Trump maintains a high level of popularity.

@LeechyKun Not democracy but free speech, although China it seems won't attack Singapore it has reasonably high levels of free speech and an open internet ( not so free if you protest the government ) . I think they use an element of racism also because only 3 countries can train military in Australia under current agreements but not a word about Singapore. Plenty to say however when it's Japan.

@billypardew2337 why would a country infect it's own population deliberately, surely they would release it in enemy territory? They also contained it quite well with only hundreds of cases getting out of China with warning. The evacuation flights were the responsibility of the country doing them, China couldn't detain foreigners but foreign governments didn't quarantine anyone, that's on them not China.

Thanks for your comment, that's exactly the impression I get. Yes Wuhan government do the wrong thing and the lockdown was too draconian initially which probably caused some deaths but at least it occured and the national government did something , including sacking the Wuhan government. Despite the comments and possibly excluding the US most people don't blame China. I am in Australia and we did the same things and got the same results. We do get called communist though because some American believe that containment of the virus is only for communists which is ridiculous, has nothing to do with politics or at least it shouldn't.

What do you mean cases too low? That's a strange statement, if you contain a virus and stop it spreading it goes away.
