M H They are free to go to a private hospital for elective surgery and it will likely be cheaper than the US because it's competing against waiting, they could also fly to other countries during normal times like Singapore or Thailand and get it much cheaper. Universal healthcare pushes down the pricing in the free market along with other factors like liability laws in the US being too much in favour of a person who is injured leading to excessive testing etc. because hospitals and doctors terrified they miss something which is in reality normal, doctors aren't gods they can only do their best.
