I am Australian and I have been looking at many key indicators of a successful society in countries of similar per capita wealth and government systems (FIVE EYES countries) we all trust each other . On every single metric the US underperforms other than number of billionaires. Road deaths, life expectancy, homicide rate, literacy rate, HIV infection rate and yet other than Canada at about 5% extra government spending we are all at about the same level of socialism. The answer to your question is the government system and constitution. A 200 plus year old constitution considered like the Model T Ford in its time is now going up against Lamborghini Westminster governments. Some African countries are now out performing the US head to head in areas like the homicide rate. One American commentator stated that some city might end up like Somalia regarding homicide rates, problem is latest data puts US homicide rate overall at a larger number and if you look at some cities about 4 or 5 times the rate of Somalia as a country.
