If you understand the US system you will understand why it can happen in the US and can't happen in Australia. The US is to the left of Australia on freetrade, to the far right of Australia on industry policy, to the far left of Australia on border security. On social policies the US is both to the right and left of Australia depending on state. So to an Australian the US is radical no matter which direction you are coming from.
