@ranthony2714 The only healthcare that it's probably essential the government runs is the emergency hospitals, other healthcare can be private , it just needs to be regulated properly, take drugs , I don't think there are any major government owned drug makers on the entire planet. If you look at the top 10 countries in life expectancy they actually have all the different systems from 100% private but highly regulated Switzerland to mixed models like Australia or Spain and totally public it would seem in Italy. So in the end it's the effectiveness of government and it's regulations regardless of the model, the US model is mixed and the government just hands out money left right and centre, more public healthcare spending per Capita than Australia but it's not universal healthcare. You might be confused I said Australia was mixed but it's backbone is the universal system but those who want extras like a private room or less waiting time for elective surgery go private. All emergency hospital care in Australia is run by our state or territory governments. For Covid 19 I believe this played a part in our response because if a state fails they're paying. In the US this was disconnected to a large extent with private and Federal government paying directly to the healthcare provider.

@ranthony2714 I think we are viewing things from a slightly different perspective, I am just looking at the cold hard numbers in a holistic way, life expectancy to me is this number because it takes into account prevention of disease as well as how functional the medical care is. From your comment you seem to be considering things like perception as in how happy people are with the services. Obviously covid 19 required a health response and showed stark differences in how health was considered and effectiveness of health systems along with the regional WHO offices overarching approaches. Canada as a large country stands out in a good way in it's response for the PAHO Pan-American Health Organization region but would be the worst country based on deaths per million in the Western Pacific region of WHO. At least Canada is rated in the top 20 for life expectancy so pretty good, the US ranks 46 however that's likely to drop when new numbers are worked out because of their covid 19 response with direct plus indirect deaths both increasing.
